Home Automation Ideas for Parents

Parenting can be all-consuming and home automation can help alleviate some of the stress that comes with trying to do everything at once while managing your kids.

Here are some home automation ideas for parents of all ages of kids:

Set your door to automatically lock when your teenager leaves for their after school job if no one else is home.

Contact sensors can alert you when the kids leave the door open when the AC is on. Expect this alert to go off constantly.

Put smart switches on devices you don’t want kids to leave on forever and you want to be able to check them.

Set up timers for bathroom fans to automatically run for a certain length of time when your teenager takes a super long, steaming shower.

Install water level sensors in your bathtub so no one accidentally overflows their bath.

Put sensors on various cabinets you want to monitor: medicine cabinets, liquor cabinets, cleaning supplies cabinets.

Vehicle presence sensors announce the arrival of teen drivers when they get home, just so the parents know.

When the dishwasher or washer/dryer finishes its cycle, a notification is sent to your teenager’s phone that the machine should be emptied, signaling that chore-time has officially begun.

If the dishwasher or washer/dryer machine door isn't opened within 10 minutes of her arrival on school days between 2 and 4 pm, parents get a notification.

Set up ‘Goodnight’ mode to check that the garage door is closed and if it is not, Hubitat will send an alert to your phone with an option to close the garage door remotely.

Use motion or contact sensors to monitor your young children’s use of exterior doors and windows. (This can also let you know if your teen is sneaking out at night.)

Create an alert sequence to flash the lights to let your kids know it’s time to go to bed in 15 minutes, then turn off their TVs at the end of that warning period.

We’d love to hear about your ideas in our Hubitat Community!
